Colossians 3:1–17

3 3:1If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 3:2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 3:3For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 3:4When Christ who is your1 life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 3:5Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:2 sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 3:6On account of these the wrath of God is coming.3 7 3:7In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 3:8But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 3:9Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self4 with its practices 10 3:10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 3:11Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave,5 free; but Christ is all, and in all.

12 3:12Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 3:13bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 3:14And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 3:15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 3:16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 3:17And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Section Overview

Paul now turns to focus on the impact of the gospel on the life of the Christian community in Colossae. While it is true that Paul emphasizes practical Christian living in this portion of the letter, it is not the case that he turns away from theology to focus solely on practice. In fact, Paul’s understanding of Christian life is rooted and nourished by theological truth.

Response

This section of Paul’s letter shows that the most significant factor in bringing about transformed lives in a Christian community is an experience of being united to Christ in his death and resurrection. No amount of moral instruction can achieve what the power of God first achieves in the life of a human being. What is more, Paul calls us to deep and nuanced reflection on what God has accomplished for the believer in Christ. The greatest motivation to faithful Christian living is a realization of what God has already done in a believer’s life.

Paul gives high priority to deep Christian community, and so should we. Paul provides a blueprint for healthy living as the community of believers in chapter 3, as Christians are to be people who are united to Christ and reflect deeply on that fact (vv. 1–4); who actively choose to rid themselves of what is inconsistent with their new life and put on what radiates the reality of Christ in their lives (vv. 5–15); who choose to cultivate a spiritual life not only for themselves as individuals but also for the whole community (vv. 16–17).
