2 John 7–11

7 7For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 8Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we1 have worked for, but may win a full reward. 9 9Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 11for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.

Section Overview

This section contains the central concern of the letter: avoiding the lure of false teachers. John desires his hearers to know that such deceivers always exist, and so we must be on guard. The remedy to false teaching is to hold fast to faithful doctrine (“the teaching of Christ”) and to have no part in supporting such false teachers.

Response

The NT is clear concerning the necessity of perseverance. True faith, though it may waver, continues. Believers must, then, be wary of false teaching while holding fast to faithful doctrine and to one another. Grasping the reality of this call to perseverance will help Christians understand why the Bible places such importance on our need of the church and of faithful soul-care within it. These are God’s ordained means for enabling us to persevere. No one ought to expect to persevere in the faith while neglecting these resources.

We must, like John, be willing to identify false teaching that compromises the gospel. We must not regard everyone who disagrees with us as false teachers, but we must resist any who distort the biblical understanding of the person of Christ. No true shepherd will ignore the presence of wolves near his flock, nor be content with general warnings. Care for the flock requires direct, explicit warning as well as instruction.

Verses 10–11 do not imply that believers cannot reach out to people of other faiths or have them into their homes. Believers can and should reach out to unbelievers in this way. What they must not do is give aid, encouragement, or monetary support to any who teach an aberrant view of the gospel. Believers must be diligent and careful when supporting any ministry. They should investigate what such ministries teach and seek guidance from a faithful pastor.
