Hebrews 10:11–18
11 10:11And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 10:12But when Christ1 had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 10:13waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 10:14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
15 10:15And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
16 10:16“This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”
17 10:17then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
18 10:18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

Section Overview: Christ’s Atoning Mission Completed
The central section of Hebrews (4:14–10:31) demonstrates first why Christ’s priestly office is better than that of Aaron and the Levitical priests (4:14–7:28), and then why Christ’s priestly ministry surpasses theirs (8:1–10:31). Our preacher now draws his instruction on these themes to a close (10:11–18) before issuing an exhortation summoning his hearers to respond appropriately to their Great High Priest’s ministry (10:19–31). One more contrast sets Jesus’ atoning sacrifice above the ministry of the Levitical priests: the priests stand daily to make offerings repeatedly, whereas Jesus has been seated at God’s right hand, his atoning work finished forever. Through his superior priesthood Christ mediates a new and better covenant (8:6), so the preacher’s exploration of the motifs of covenant, sanctuary, and sacrifice concludes (10:15–18) where it began (8:7–13): with the new covenant promises of Jeremiah 31:31–34.

Response
Christ’s seated posture at God’s right hand confirms that his one sacrifice forgives sin, cleanses the conscience, and grants access to the presence of God. From now on no sacrifice for sin, other than Christ’s completed death on the cross, has any standing in God’s eyes. The following exhortation will show that this truth has both encouraging and sobering implications. We will be encouraged to enter God’s heavenly sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, since our hearts are “sprinkled clean from an evil conscience” (10:19, 22). On the other hand, we dare not turn away from Jesus, for apart from him “there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins” (10:26). The covenant he mediates imparts the inseparable twin blessings of once-for-all forgiveness and powerful transformation of heart, making us willing and able to obey God’s law. As we rest in the sufficiency of Christ’s blood to remove our guilt, we will submit gladly to his heavenly reign. We trust and obey.
