Overview of Hebrews 9:11–28

Having sketched the inadequacy of the first (Sinai) covenant (8:7–13), its sanctuary, and its worship (9:1–10), our author explores the superiority of Christ’s high priestly ministry, with reference to the themes of sanctuary, sacrifice, and covenant. The sanctuary in which he serves is heaven itself, and the sacrifice he offers is his own blood (9:11–14, 21–28). Through his death he redeemed people who, by transgressing the old covenant, had forfeited their lives; thus he mediates a new covenant that secures their eternal blessedness (9:15–20).
