Revelation 11:1–2
11 11:1Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, 2 11:2but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.”
Section Overview
The interlude continues. John continues prophesying (cf. Rev. 10:11) and is instructed to take a measuring rod and measure the temple, altar, and worshipers (11:1). As will be explained below, this symbolizes God’s protection of the saints, those who belong to him. The courtyard of the temple, however, is not protected (v. 2). The nations will trample the holy city of Jerusalem for forty-two months. In other words, even though God protects his people from his wrath, they will still face persecution and trouble, which will last the entire time from the resurrection to the second coming.

Response
These two verses summarize the glory and the agony of existence in this present evil world. On the one hand, believers are protected and guarded by God. Nothing can separate us from God’s love in Jesus Christ, as Paul teaches (Rom. 8:35–39). The Good Shepherd always tends his sheep and never forsakes or leaves them (John 10:1–15). On the other hand, those who belong to Jesus Christ will experience discrimination, hatred, and even death. Life in this world is not easy but is marked by suffering, distress, and opposition, and yet God is with us, guarding, guiding, nourishing, and strengthening until the end.
