Revelation 12:7–12

7 12:7Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, 8 12:8but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 12:9And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 12:10And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers1 has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 12:11And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. 12 12:12Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

Section Overview

John pulls back the curtain to show what happens behind the scenes, revealing a war in heaven between Michael and Satan and their angels (Rev. 12:7). The dragon and his angels were expelled from heaven (v. 8), and the one who has deceived and oppressed the people of God was thrown down to the earth (v. 9). The promised kingdom, it is declared, has come, as has the authority of Christ, for Satan as the accuser of believers has been thrown down to the earth (v. 10). We now learn the basis of the dragon’s defeat, the reason he was expelled from heaven: believers conquer the dragon because the Lamb has shed his blood for them (v. 11). They also triumph in holding fast to the testimony of Jesus Christ, willing to die for its sake. There is joy in heaven over Satan’s expulsion, but the coming of the kingdom is still in an already–not yet phase, as the Devil comes to the earth with fierce anger, knowing the time is short before he is defeated forever (v. 12).

Response

What we see on earth, John tells us, is not all there is to reality. There is a cosmic conflict, a heavenly war, between angels and demons, between Satan and Michael. The war is won in a most unusual way: by the death and resurrection of the Christ. Satan was expelled from heaven because of the blood of the Lamb. What this means for those who belong to Christ is the removal of guilt. Satan no longer has any basis for accusing believers before God; we are free from our sins forever. Christians are free from guilt, and are free also from clinging to our own lives. We are willing to give our lives for the sake of Jesus Christ if called to do so.
