Revelation 2:18–29

18 2:18“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

19 2:19“‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20 2:20But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21 2:21I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 2:22Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, 23 2:23and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works. 24 2:24But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden. 25 2:25Only hold fast what you have until I come. 26 2:26The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 2:27and he will rule1 them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 2:28And I will give him the morning star. 29 2:29He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

Section Overview

The church of Thyatira is addressed by the Son of God, the one with eyes “like a flame of fire” and feet of “burnished bronze” (Rev. 2:18). The church is commended for its love, faith, endurance, and progress. Nevertheless, a complaint about the church is emphasized. They are tolerating a female prophet who is teaching the same error criticized in the previous letter, i.e., eating food sacrificed to idols and indulging in sexual sin. Because the woman and her followers have refused to repent, judgment will soon follow. And each will be judged according to his or her works. The members of the church who don’t subscribe to this errant teaching are exhorted to persevere until Jesus comes. Those who conquer will be rewarded, reigning with Jesus over the nations and receiving the “morning star” (v. 28).

Response

We learn from this letter that love can easily turn into a compromising tolerance, which is ultimately unloving. Rather than taking a stand for the truth, the church at Thyatira was permitting a false prophetess and her disciples to live in a way clearly contrary to the will of God. How easy it is for us to trim back what the Lord says about sexual morality and to think we are loving, generous, and kind in doing so. Genuine love always abides in the truth—there is both tenderness and toughness, grace and truth. Tolerance that contravenes biblical morality must not be confused with love.

God judges those who are unrighteous and pursue evil. And yet we also see the mercy of God, warning and instructing before executing judgment. He grants time and space for those engaged in evil to repent. Judgment is God’s “strange” work (Isa. 28:21). He doesn’t delight in the death of sinners but pleads with them to repent and live (Ezek. 18:23, 32). He stretches out his hands and invites people to come to him for forgiveness (Rom. 10:21), saying to all who are burdened that he will give them rest (Matt. 11:28–30). But those who despise God’s mercy and refuse to turn from evil will ultimately be judged. God waits, but not forever. Finally, justice must be executed.

We also get a glimpse of the future. Believers will reign with Jesus; we will rule the world with him. The rule initially granted to Adam and Eve in the garden (Gen. 1:28; 2:15) will be restored, but it will be more than restored. It will extend over the whole world, the entire universe. The greatest reward in the new creation is the morning star, Jesus himself. Still, there are indications that believers will have exciting responsibilities and tasks in the coming new world. The creativity and joy of planning and executing will be ours in a new and unimaginable way as we rule under our sovereign King, Jesus.
