Revelation 7:1–8
7 7:1After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. 2 7:2Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, 3 7:3saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.” 4 7:4And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:
5 7:512,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed,
12,000 from the tribe of Reuben,
12,000 from the tribe of Gad,
6 7:612,000 from the tribe of Asher,
12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali,
12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh,
7 7:712,000 from the tribe of Simeon,
12,000 from the tribe of Levi,
12,000 from the tribe of Issachar,
8 7:812,000 from the tribe of Zebulun,
12,000 from the tribe of Joseph,
12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.
Section Overview
Chapter 6 concluded with the final judgment, asking who can withstand God’s wrath on the final day. Chapter 7 functions as an interlude and answers the question posed in chapter 6: those sealed by God will be spared from wrath. They are the ones, as 7:9 says, who stand before God’s throne. The four angels hold back, for now, the four winds of judgment that will bring about the dissolution of this present world (Rev. 7:1; cf. 6:12–14). Another angel arises with the seal of God, saying that the earth, sea, and trees must not be harmed until God’s servants are sealed (7:2–3). The seal will protect God’s servants from wrath at the final judgment, and God’s servants will be authenticated as his own. Verses 4–8 record the number of those sealed: the total is 144,000, with 12,000 sealed from each of the twelve tribes of Israel. The identity of the 144,000 is contested, but I will argue that they represent the church of Jesus Christ, the people of God. We can summarize the passage this way: Who will be protected from the wrath of God and the wrath of the Lamb? Those who are sealed and protected by God, i.e., the 144,000, the true Israel, the church of Jesus Christ.

Response
Who will escape the wrath of God at the final judgment? Only those who belong to God, those who are sealed by him, who are numbered by him. If we are sealed by God, we are protected and authenticated by him. At the same time, those of us who are sealed by God are the true and new Israel, the chosen and loved people of the Lord. We too deserve the wrath of God but have been spared by his grace and mercy, which should lead to thankfulness and heartfelt praise. How wonderful it is to be counted among his flock, to be the army of the Lord—an army that preaches peace and love through the slain and risen Lamb!
