121 A Song of Ascents.
121:1 I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
Section Overview
Psalm 121 seems to be intended to instill confidence in those making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem to worship (for the Songs of Ascents in general cf. Section Overview of Psalm 120). The successful journey becomes a parable for the whole of one’s life, in which the faithful can be confident of God’s tireless care.
Psalm 121 has two sections. The first (vv. 1–2) is a question and answer about one’s “help”; the second (vv. 3–8) consists of repetitions of the word “keep.”
Section Outline
I. From Where Does My Help Come? (121:1–2)
II. The Lord Will Keep You at All Times (121:3–8)
Response
As suggested in the comments, Psalm 121 uses the worshiper’s safe journey to Jerusalem as a parable for the safety the Lord provides for his faithful in the whole of their lives. Indeed, one function of worship is to renew the worshipers’ sense of confidence and loyalty toward the Lord. Here, as in the image of the Lord as “shepherd,” God’s care as “keeper” for the whole body of his people applies as well to the members (cf. comments on 23:1–4; 74:1–3).727 The faithful are to trust God with the details of their lives, not only with the big picture.
As with other psalms of confidence, Psalm 121 stresses the Lord’s care (cf. comment on 91:3–8). The faithful will learn from this to trust the Lord, even in circumstances in which this care is not visible.
Christians need this reaffirmation of God’s care for their lives. As they sing this in worship, they can see their safe journey to church as a parable for their safe journey through life under God’s particular care (Matt. 6:25–34; 10:28–31; Phil. 4:6–7; 1 Pet. 5:6–7).Psalm 121
