for his steadfast love endures forever.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
Section Overview
This hymn calls on the worshiping congregation to give thanks to the Lord, who has shown his steadfast love throughout the history of God’s people, from creating the world and bringing Israel out of Egypt to leading them through the wilderness and giving them victory over those who opposed them as they took the Promised Land. The psalm includes more recent acts of God’s deliverance and care (vv. 23–25), interpreting them as the continuation of God’s enduring commitment to his people.
Each verse in this psalm has the same refrain (“for his steadfast love endures forever”); one cannot miss the theme. Perhaps the psalm was to be sung responsively, with a priest leading with the first line of each verse and a Levitical choir or the whole congregation replying with the refrain (cf. 2 Chron. 7:3, 6; Ezra 3:11).
The focus throughout is corporate; that is, God has done his great deeds for Israel, the whole people of God, and the particular persons are blessed because they are members of this body. When Psalm 136 mentions “us” in its final recollection of great deeds (vv. 23–24), it need not imply that the singers themselves are in the distress; they share in common with the previous generations their participation in the body of God’s people, Israel, much as future generations refer to themselves as “us” in relation to the exodus (Ex. 13:14–15), even if they were not physically present in Egypt.754
Broadly speaking, Psalm 136 consists of an invitation—plural imperatives addressed to the whole congregation (vv. 1–3)—and then a description of God based on his marvelous deeds in creation and redemptive history (vv. 4–25) before finishing by repeating the invitation to give thanks (v. 26). The long middle section, however, breaks down by subject matter into four sections, covering creation (vv. 4–9), the exodus (vv. 10–16), the conquest (vv. 17–22), and further instances of divine deliverance (vv. 23–25).

Response
Psalm 136 gives its intended application explicitly: “Give thanks,” and do so in corporate song. The psalm roots its call to thankful song in the Lord’s character, namely, his “steadfast love,” which “endures forever.” The supreme God showed his steadfast love in making all things and ruling over all, in the great events of sacred history, and in his continuing care for his people. With its corporate focus the psalm situates each of its faithful singers in solidarity with the historical participants of these events, as heirs and beneficiaries. Their present membership in such a people is a gift to be treasured; the duties of faith and obedience are themselves privileges.
Christians, both Jewish and Gentile, are members of the people in this story. As they sing this they can treasure the divine generosity that runs through all the chapters of the story and find themselves drawn to greater thankfulness, love, and obedience. To say that God is love (1 John 4:8, 16) is to confess that all his commandments stem from his love and that the opportunity to dwell and worship among those who are being shaped by those commandments is a great gift beyond all human deserving.Psalm 136
