Psalm 140

140     To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

 140:1    Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men;

    preserve me from violent men,

 2     who plan evil things in their heart

    and stir up wars continually.

 3     They make their tongue sharp as a serpent’s,

    and under their lips is the venom of asps.  Selah

 4     Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;

    preserve me from violent men,

    who have planned to trip up my feet.

 5     The arrogant have hidden a trap for me,

    and with cords they have spread a net;1

    beside the way they have set snares for me.  Selah

 6     I say to the Lord, You are my God;

    give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O Lord!

 7     O Lord, my Lord, the strength of my salvation,

    you have covered my head in the day of battle.

 8     Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked;

    do not further their2 evil plot, or they will be exalted!  Selah

 9     As for the head of those who surround me,

    let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!

10     Let burning coals fall upon them!

    Let them be cast into fire,

    into miry pits, no more to rise!

11     Let not the slanderer be established in the land;

    let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!

12     I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted,

    and will execute justice for the needy.

13     Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name;

    the upright shall dwell in your presence.

Section Overview

This individual lament serves the needs of people under threat from ungodly people who intend serious harm (similar to Psalms 5; 35; 54; 56; 59; 69; 70; 71; 109). The psalm does not clarify whether these ungodly people are Israelites, but this is the most likely identification in a psalm of David. Psalms 140–143 all share these themes.

Psalm 140 moves from urgent requests to God (vv. 1–5) to a recollection of God’s previous care, which leads to another request (vv. 6–8). Then comes a request for the schemers to be thwarted and properly punished (vv. 9–11), followed by a concluding expression of confident hope (vv. 12–13).

Section Outline

  I.  Deliver Me from the Plots of the Wicked! (140:1–5)

  II.  O Lord, My Strength, Hear Me! (140:6–8)

  III.  Let Their Schemes Recoil on Them! (140:9–11)

  IV.  I Am Confident That the Lord Will Protect Me (140:12–13)

Response

A priest in Israel should choose this individual lament for cases in which a member of his faithful flock is under threat from powerful and unfaithful members. This would strengthen the faith and courage of all the faithful and also strengthen the bond of mutual support tying the faithful together into a living community; it would also serve to warn the unfaithful of God’s attitude toward their exploitative schemes, which must eventually be punished if repentance is not forthcoming.

Perhaps many Christians would not now be in a position in which their fellow professing Christians are the threat (although there have been many such cases in the church’s history); they are under pressure, however, from powerful and violent people outside the church who would suppress their faithfulness. They too can use a psalm such as this as a form of prayer and a warning to those in power.Psalm 140
