Habakkuk Bibliography
Andersen, Francis I. Habakkuk: A New Translation with Introduction and Commentary. AB. New York: Doubleday, 2001.
Easily the most comprehensive commentary on Habakkuk available today. Andersen explores most issues in the book exhaustively though with clarity. An extensive bibliography means this is the starting point for any serious work on this book.
Baker, David W. Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah: An Introduction and Commentary. Leicester, UK: Inter-Varsity Press, 1988.
An excellent short commentary on Habakkuk. Good for gaining an overview of the issues it presents in interpretation of particular verses.
Goldingay, John. “Habakkuk.” In Minor Prophets II. Understanding the Bible Commentary. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 2012.
Another good short commentary. Where Baker is helpful in understanding the detail of particular verses, Goldingay is better at showing how a passage as a whole fits together.
Mathews, Jeanette. Performing Habakkuk: Faithful Re-Enactment in the Midst of Crisis. Eugene, OR: Pickwick, 2012.
A revision of a doctoral thesis that is more readable than most. Mathews employs performance theory to show how the book aims to transform its audience, showing how this is true of both the ancient context and our own.
Patterson, Richard D. Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah: An Exegetical Commentary. Richardson, TX: Biblical Studies Press, 2003.
A detailed exegesis of Habakkuk making use of the Hebrew text. Although the title might suggest a solely exegetical work, Patterson includes an exposition of the text which reflects theologically on it. This section is more accessible for those who do not read Hebrew and draws the detailed comments together.
Roberts, J. J. M. Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah: A Commentary. Louisville: Westminster/John Knox, 1991.
A theologically rich exposition of Habakkuk that is grounded in a rigorous examination of the Hebrew text. More accessible than Andersen.
