Commentaries on the Letters of John
Barker, G. W. “1 John, 2 John, 3 John.” The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, vol. 12. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1981. A spiritually penetrating study of John’s letters by a beloved provost at Fuller Seminary, well known for pastoral wisdom.
Brooke, A. E. A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Johannine Epistles. ICC. Edinburgh: T. & T. Clark, 1912. This is the classic study of the Greek text in the International Critical Commentary series. Useful particularly for critical text issues.
Brown, R. E. The Epistles of John. AB 30. New York: Doubleday, 1982. Written by one of the most famous Johannine scholars, Brown’s commentary covers every detail with encyclopaedic depth in 812 pages. An incomparable volume filled with scholarly riches and sound pastoral insight.
Bultmann, R. The Johannine Epistles. Hermenia. Philadelphia: Fortress, 1973. A brief though important study in the Hermeneia series, Bultmann’s work shows his mastery of the religious currents in the Hellenistic world. Less useful for preaching and exposition.
Dodd, C. H. The Johannine Epistles. MNTC. New York: Harper & Row, 1946. Occasionally eccentric, Dodd’s commentary always gives a fresh insight or unexpected solution to historical problems. A scholarly work with limited application to the contemporary church.
Marshall, I. H. The Epistles of John. NICNT. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1978. An evangelical scholar at Aberdeen University, Scotland, Marshall brings a wealth of pastoral experience to careful exegetical work. An outstanding volume that richly repays careful study.
Smalley, S. 1, 2, 3 John. WBC 51. Waco, Tex.: Word, 1984. Stephen Smalley is a famous Johannine scholar and here culls the best insights from massive scholarly literature. An essential volume for serious exegetes.
Strecker, Georg. The Johannine Letters. Hermenia. Philadelphia: Fortress, 1995. This is a new volume in the Hermenia series, designed to supplement, if not replace, Bultmann’s earlier work.
Popular Expositions of the Letters of John
Barclay, W. The Letters of John. Philadelphia: Westminster, 1976. While Barclay is found in almost every parish library, he often takes up one view on an issue and fails to let readers know what options are available. Always interesting, but best supplemented with other writers.
Bruce, F. F. The Epistles of John. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1970. An easy-to-read commentary by one of the leading scholars of New Testament studies in the twentieth century.
Stott, J. R. W. The Epistles of John. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1964. Perhaps one of the best popular commentators, Stott writes passionately about these letters’ message for the church today. Always creative, always penetrating.
Thompson, M. M. 1–3 John. IVPNTC. Downer’s Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity, 1992. A professor at Fuller Seminary, Meye Thompson’s study gives lively, outstanding illustrations for preaching, based on a wealth of scholarly research.
