Response

The beauty and humaneness of the culture described here by Paul—rejoicing, restoration of relationships, mutual comfort, unity and peace, heartfelt physical affection—is the culture the gospel breeds. This is where the gospel takes us. The same grace that welcomes us into the glories of the new covenant (ch. 3) and reconciles us to God with an imputed righteousness (ch. 5) empties any right to resentment or bitterness or withholding of love from other believers, however messy they may be. For God has given up all his charges against us—however messy we may be.

We must marinate in the gospel, considering “the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,” all of which are freely ours. As we do, we can move toward other believers, the lovely and the unlovely, in peace and harmony.
