1 Thessalonians 3:11–13

11 3:11Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, 12 3:12and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, 13 3:13so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

Section Overview

Paul prayerfully invokes God’s blessing on the Thessalonians. He specifically refers to God the Father and Jesus working together in the Godhead for the benefit of the church. In addition to asking again for God to provide a way for Paul to return to Thessalonica, Paul and his colleagues pray for the church to grow in love, since this will further root them in holiness as they await the return of Jesus.

Response

As before, we can learn both from how Paul conducts ministry and from how he intended the church to respond to his words. Paul models good ministerial practice here in multiple ways. Having just reported to the Thessalonians that he prays for them, he immediately engages in supplication on their behalf. By reminding them repeatedly of the lordship of Christ and the fatherhood of God, he invites them to live with the knowledge that God has adopted them and that Jesus is their Lord. Furthermore, Paul provides us an example of missionary prayer, prompting us to petition God regularly for Christian love to increase within our churches. Finally, we should observe how Paul’s own love serves as an excellent model for the churches; in similar ways, ministers should be known for their love of others.

Indeed, all Christians should ask the Lord to increase our love for everyone in our churches, our neighborhoods, and the world around us. God desires our sanctification in response to his grace, and holiness cannot be found apart from love.
