1 Thessalonians 3:6–10

6 3:6But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love and reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, as we long to see you— 7 3:7for this reason, brothers,1 in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith. 8 3:8For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord. 9 3:9For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 3:10as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith?

1 Or brothers and sisters

Section Overview

Timothy has returned with the good report that the Thessalonians are thriving in their Christian faith and love. Paul expresses the joy, comfort, and thanksgiving that he finds in this news. This permits him another opportunity to affirm and encourage the Thessalonians in their steadfast faith, and he again mentions his desire to see them face-to-face.

Response

Paul and his colleagues continue to model a wonderful approach to missions. They rejoice at how God sustains the church in this world. Moreover, they engage in public thanksgiving in order to encourage the church. Even amid the trials of ministry (cf. 3:7), a church is enlivened by how its leaders and servants reflect an attitude of joy and thanksgiving, publicly celebrating all that God is doing.

Yet there will always be challenges in this world. Thus God’s people must remain faithful, loving, and steadfast (qualities all lauded in 3:6–8), and all of us are in continual need of growth, encouragement, and further instruction in following Christ (v. 10).
