2 Thessalonians 3:1–5
3 3:1Finally, brothers,1 pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored,2 as happened among you, 2 3:2and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith. 3 3:3But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.3 4 3:4And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. 5 3:5May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.
Section Overview
Paul and his colleagues ask the Thessalonians to pray on behalf of the Pauline mission in order that the gospel would spread and that their ministry would be protected. Paul also reminds the church that the faithful Lord will defend them. He expresses confidence in the Thessalonians, focusing on their obedient response and on how the Lord will root them in love and endurance.

Response
Those in ministry should follow Paul’s lead in inviting others to pray for our work. Similarly, it is a high calling to pray for others as they engage in gospel ministry, including missionaries, ministers, and ministry volunteers. Note how Paul’s prayer desires both extensive and intensive growth of the gospel—that it would go to many places and grow deeply in the hearts of those who respond. This forms a wonderfully balanced vision for gospel expansion.
God is indeed faithful. Thus we need not fear human or demonic opposition, since the Lord establishes and defends his people. We should publicly express confidence in the work of God among believers around us, for such expressions provide great encouragement to others and follow the apostolic model (3:4). Finally, our Christian walk should be marked by hearts directed “to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.”
