2 John 1–3

1 1The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth, 2 2because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:

3 3Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.

Section Overview

Using the standard form for beginning a letter in the Hellenistic world, John greets the church to which he writes, establishing the twin themes of the letter: truth and love. Gospel truth grounds and promotes mutual love between John, this church, and other believers.

Response

This text strongly emphasizes Christian love and fellowship. Since “all who know the truth” are said to love the specific church in view here, we should understand that all Christians should love every church that knows and upholds the truth of the gospel. Failure to love others who hold fast to the gospel exposes a failure to truly grasp that gospel.

Too easily, people separate love and truth. Some say they love people too much to be too concerned with doctrinal error. They see it as unloving to discriminate between true and false teaching. Others affirm the importance of doctrinal precision but fail to express the love for other believers this doctrine should produce. Either end of this spectrum is a grave error. There is no “either/or” in this arena, no room for considering it safer to err in one direction or the other. The interconnectedness of love and truth shown here is crucial for Christian living and witness.
