3 John 5–8

5 5Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, 6 6who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. 7 7For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. 8 8Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.

Section Overview

One of the evidences that Gaius is “walking in the truth” (v. 3) is that he supports those who are sent out by the churches to preach the gospel in other regions. In affirming Gaius’s practice, John demonstrates the propriety and importance of supporting faithful missionaries.

Response

John sets a high standard indeed, and one that bears some pondering when churches consider their participation with missionaries in terms of money, engagement, encouragement, and prayer. The church is to support this mission work and not to expect the world to do so. John’s teaching is not intended to prevent an unbeliever from supporting a well-digging or other humanitarian project led by Christians, but it is telling the church to shoulder the responsibility of taking the gospel to the nations. As we support those who go out to proclaim the gospel, we have a hand in the work that is done. This is an appeal to gospel-rooted self-interest, the desire to be a part of as much kingdom work as we can in the short lives that we have. We can multiply our impact by supporting others.
