3 John 9–10
9 9I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. 10 10So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, talking wicked nonsense against us. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church.
Section Overview
In contrast to the positive example of Gaius, John describes the wickedness of Diotrephes, who is opposing John’s authority and disrupting the faithful work of the church.
Response
One of the insidious things about pride is how it blinds us to its power. As wrong as Diotrephes’s actions clearly are to us, we nevertheless emulate him whenever we disregard the plain teaching of the NT, for the NT is the apostolic teaching handed down to us. Refusing to acknowledge proper authority is a common issue in the Western church today, to the extent that many do not even recognize the church as having any authority. Yet, Hebrews 13:17 clearly commands, “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account.” We would do well to examine ourselves honestly to see if we are submitting willingly to proper authority.
