Jude 3–4

3 3Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 4For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Section Overview

Although Jude had intended to write a letter focusing on his readers’ shared experience of salvation in Christ, false teachers infiltrating the church forced him to change course. In light of these false teachers, Jude calls the believers to stay true to the apostolic gospel.

Response

As God’s people, we need to be constantly reminded to “contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.” God has given us his Word and fellowship with his people to continually motivate us to remain faithful to the gospel. We do not need fresh revelation from God; what we need is a fresh understanding and application of the gospel that God revealed through Jesus Christ and passed down to us through the apostolic witness recorded for us in Scripture.
