Section Overview
The segmented genealogy detailing Judah’s descendants provides many branches as well as the main line to David. The opening verses are reminders of wrongdoing and its consequences (1 Chron. 2:3, 7), but the grace of God is seen in the continuing family line leading to David.

Response
Juxtaposed prominently at the very beginning of the naming of the descendants of Israel are God’s judgment on “evil,” on the one hand, and his amazing grace, on the other. Despite Er’s and Judah’s abhorrent behavior, the line leading to David and on to Jesus was through Tamar and her son Perez (2:3–4; Matt. 1:3). Evil does not have the final word, and even in the midst of it God can bring about good, as seen above all in the cross (Acts 3:13–15; Col. 2:15).
It is not common to tell of past wrongdoing and failures in the history of our local congregations or of significant families in the church, but there can be a positive value. Judah was the major tribe among the returning exiles: What was the exiles’ reaction to being reminded that a Judahite caused “trouble” when the Israelites began the initial possession of the land? Recounting past failure and disobedience, and of how God worked in that situation, is an opportunity to reflect on both the consequences of “breaking faith” and his grace that continues to lead us on.
1 The first son, “Zimri,” is “Zabdi” in Joshua 7:1; in Hebrew the letters of these names are easy to confuse. Similar confusion is known elsewhere (cf. ESV mgs. at 2 Chron. 22:2; 36:9).
2 The Hebrew text has “Achar,” which is a play on the word translated “troubler,” ʻoker. This wordplay is first introduced in Joshua 7:24–26.
3 In 1 Samuel 16:10–11 and 17:12 Jesse has eight sons, with David the eighth. The Chronicler possibly had names for only seven, and listed them as “firstborn,” “second,” “third,” and so forth to recall the selection process in which each son was brought to Samuel in order. It is also common in lists for the seventh name to be important.
4 In Joshua 14:6 Jephunneh is described as “the Kenizzite,” i.e., a descendant of Esau (Gen. 36:11). The family at some time became incorporated in Judah.
5 The detail that “Sheshan had no sons” (v. 34) suggests “Ahlai” (v. 31) is a daughter.
