Section Overview
This list picks up where 1 Chronicles 2:10–17, describing the descendants of Ram, left off. David’s descendants are listed in three distinct sections, consecutive in time. First is a list of all his sons and one daughter, along with naming of their mothers (3:1–9). The second section is a linear succession of kings from Solomon to Zedekiah (vv. 10–16). The third is more detailed; it features a list of postexilic generations, although the number of generations is unclear (vv. 17–24; cf. comment there). The chapter thus covers at least 550 years of turbulent history and continues probably as far as the Chronicler’s own time. No name is highlighted or comment added other than details of David’s successive capitals (v. 4); what is important is that David’s line continues unbroken.

Response
Christians rejoice in the fulfillment in the coming of Christ, the “son of David,” yet he came a thousand years after the reign of David. The Chronicler lists David’s continuing line through six hundred of those years, with hope that one of that line would one day be king again; however, a further four turbulent centuries passed before Jesus’ birth. This time scale encourages us to have a long-term view of God’s keeping his promises and to persevere in faithfully trusting (cf. 2 Pet. 3:4–15) as we look forward to the culmination of that kingship. We await the One who says, “‘I, Jesus, . . . am the root and the descendant of David.’ . . . The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come’” (Rev. 22:16–17).
1 Second Chronicles 36:10 describes the king Zedekiah as Jehoiachin’s “brother”; this is not the Zedekiah who is the second son of Jehoiakim (1 Chron. 3:16) but his uncle, a son of Josiah (v. 15). The Hebrew word translated “brother” is more widely “relative, kinsman” (2 Kings 24:17 uses a different word, “uncle”). It is difficult to reconcile the birth order of Josiah’s sons suggested by 1 Chronicles 3:15 with ages given in 2 Chronicles 36:2, 5, 9, 11 (2 Kings 23:31, 36; 24:8, 18), possibly resulting from error in scribal transmission of ages.
