Luke 1:57–66

57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, 60 but his mother answered, “No; he shall be called John.” 61 And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.” 62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. 63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. 64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. 65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea, 66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him.

Section Overview

We begin a section that includes two births, the birth of the Baptist and that of the Christ. Both are remarkable and miraculous. John is born to an old couple past the time of childbearing and is given a name that surprises neighbors and relatives, and Zechariah, upon confirming the name John, is able to speak. Jesus is greater than the Baptist, for he is born to a virgin and his name signifies that the Lord saves. Shepherds, Simeon, and Anna confirm the significance of his birth. The promise that Zechariah and Elizabeth would have a son is fulfilled, and neighbors and friends gather to rejoice. They are astonished to learn that the boy’s name will be John instead of Zechariah. When Zechariah confirms that he will be called John, his inability to speak ceases and he bursts out in praise to God. Fear falls on all present, and they recognize that God is with the child in a special way, anticipating what God would do through him.

Response

The Lord keeps his promises, as we see in the story of John’s birth to Zechariah and Elizabeth. And he does not hold onto his anger forever. He forgives Zechariah and fills him with joy when he fulfills what he said about the birth of John. When the Lord acts, people respond in awe and wonder and recognize that the Lord is at work. We pray that he will continue to work in such a way in our day.
