Luke 12:54–59

54 He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

57 “And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. 59 I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.”1

Section Overview

The coming of the kingdom is not universally accepted, nor does it bring harmony and peace immediately (Luke 12:49–53). Still, all of Israel should see the presence of the kingdom in Jesus, and those who do not do so are hypocrites. The fulfillment of God’s promises in Jesus is as plain as discerning weather patterns, for people are able to tell when rain is coming or a scorching hot wind is arising from the south. The reason some cannot interpret what is happening in Jesus’ ministry is their own evil. Jesus proceeds to make the same point another way. They have the capacity to judge and discern what is right; they should realize that God has visited his people in Jesus. It is crisis hour, and it is as if Israel were going to be tried before a magistrate. They must, so to speak, get right with God in Christ now, before the trial begins. If they do not turn to Jesus, the magistrate will turn them over to the judge, and the judge will turn them over to authorities who will imprison them. All of this means that those who do not repent will be punished forever.

Response

Many who disbelieve say that they would believe if the evidence were clearer, if they could truly tell that Jesus is the Messiah. But Jesus says something quite different. It is clear that the kingdom has come in Jesus; there is plenty of evidence in order to discern who he is. It is like reading the signs of the weather when it is clear that a storm is coming or a heat wave is on the way. But the time to discern and to change will not last forever. A day of judgment is coming, a day on which repentance will no longer be an option. Jesus is still calling to all today, summoning us mercifully and tenderly, and we are to follow him in order to escape judgment.
