35 And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.”
Section Overview
Jesus has just predicted that Peter will deny him, showing that the hour of danger has arrived. The disciples must be ready for the battle. Jesus reminds them of his sending them out previously for mission without provisions; they had everything they needed on that occasion. But the hour of darkness has come, and now they should take provisions with them, including a sword. Jesus emphasizes that Isaiah 53:12 is about to be fulfilled in his life, as he is to be counted among the transgressors in his death. The opposition to Jesus is about to climax. The disciples reply that they have two swords, and their clutching of these two swords signifies that they misunderstand what Jesus is teaching. But Jesus cuts the whole discussion short, saying in effect, “Enough of this.” Their blindness will be clear in the ensuing narrative.

Response
When days of evil come we are tempted to rely on the flesh, on human wisdom, human strategies, and human strength. We desperately want security, and we are tempted to find it in other places other than the Lord. Jesus reminds us that we need to be prepared spiritually for battle as we face opposition in bringing the glorious good news to the nations. We also see here that Jesus will be counted among sinners, that he will be reckoned as a sinner for our sake and our salvation. All of us are transgressors; all of us have failed to please God, and Jesus will be counted as one of us so that we might find forgiveness and joy.
