66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, 67 “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”
Section Overview
Luke compresses the Jewish trial into five verses prior to Jesus’ presentation as a criminal before Pilate. The political and religious leaders gather in council to deliberate concerning Jesus. They focus on the political charge of whether he has claimed to be Messiah. Jesus replies that they would not believe even if he told them the truth. But he goes on to tell them that he is the Son of Man seated at God’s right hand. Jesus then affirms that he is the Son of God, and thus the Christology of this section is incredibly high. The council determines that Jesus has said all they need to hear, and they condemn him as guilty.

Response
Jesus is condemned by the Jewish leaders for being the Son of Man and the Son of God. Ironically, Jesus truly is the Son of Man and the Son of God, and the Jewish leaders reject their Messiah, their King, and their God. That Jesus fulfills God’s plan is suggested by the irony woven into the story. Those who condemn Jesus to death often speak and act in ways better than they know. Their very words show that God’s plan is being realized, even though they do not realize or believe the full import of what they say. For example, when the religious leaders ask Jesus if he is the Son of God, Jesus says that they claim he is. The religious leaders use this very claim as a reason to kill him. But what they claim is in fact true. Jesus is the Son of God. Unfortunately, they do not believe the very words they utter. All of this fulfills what Jesus has predicted all along, that the Jewish leaders would condemn him and put him to death (Luke 9:22, 44; 17:25; 18:31–33). Even in the midst of the greatest evil ever done, God’s plan is being carried out. The religious leaders think they are getting rid of Jesus, but they do not know that his rule over the whole world will become a reality through the cross and resurrection.
