39 He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.”
Section Overview
The clause “he also told them” (Luke 6:39) indicates a new subsection beginning here; the theme holding these verses together is seeing things rightly. Jesus offers an illustration of a blind man in verse 39. A blind man cannot lead another blind man because it will lead to disaster; they will both fall into a ditch from which they cannot extricate themselves. In the end, disciples will become just like their teachers (v. 40). If we follow a teacher who is blind, we will become blind as well. Jesus continues to address the issue of sight (vv. 41–42). We may see a small fault in someone else’s life while failing to see our own defects. We must beware concentrating on the peccadillos of others while at the same time being blind to our own major problems. We must attend to ourselves and see our own faults; then we will be able to help others with their own.

Response
We can defend a faultfinding and critical spirit by saying, “God has given me the gift of discernment,” or, “As a leader I need to point these things out.” It can feel delicious to run down someone else, but these verses remind us that God will judge us by the standard we judge others, that God will forgive us if we forgive others. We will see the faults in the lives of others, and we can help them with their shortcomings, but only if we have seen ourselves in the mirror and attended honestly with our own sin. We also see that it is crucial to select the right teachers and role models, for we imitate what we love.
