16 “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”
Section Overview
The lighting of the lamp in this passage probably signifies reception of the Word of the kingdom (cf. Luke 8:4–15). One must not cover up the message or hide it but must obey it so that all may see its impact on our lives. Ultimately, how people live will be exposed to all. Luke 8:18 is the main point of the section and the key for interpreting it. Believers must attend carefully to how they hear and respond to the Word. Those who respond in obedience to revelation will be given more truth, but those who reject the truth will wander even farther from the truth.

Response
If we respond to the light, we will be given more light. If we reject the light, we are traveling down the road of darkness. Decisions made today and tomorrow are weighty, for we do not stay neutral. Either we keep the Word of the kingdom and grow in our knowledge of God or we turn away from it and become slowly submerged into more and more darkness.
