19 Then his mother and his brothers1 came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
Section Overview
The theme of this chapter is responding in obedience to God’s Word, and this theme continues in these verses. Jesus’ mother and brothers attempt to meet with him but are unable to get to him because of the crowd. Jesus is told that they are trying to see him, but he responds by stating that those who hear and do God’s Word are his family.

Response
Families are important. Jesus reaffirms the command to honor our fathers and mothers (cf. 18:20). But some put family first, and Jesus criticizes those who place family, tribe, or country above obedience to God’s Word. Family can also hinder us from being disciples of Jesus (cf. 9:59–62). We must be willing to go wherever he calls us to go.
