Job • Psalms • Proverbs • Ecclesiastes • Song of Songs
The books of poetry vary in literary form and content, but in general they contain some of the world’s most enduring poetic achievements, not only in sacred Scripture, but also in all of ancient literature. They cover a wide variety of functions, from wisdom instruction (see article) to the liturgical and personal prayers, hymns and worship of Israel (Psalms). Other than some narrative elements present at the beginning and end of Job and in Ecclesiastes, these books are almost entirely composed of poetry. Ancient Hebrew poetry employed a number of formulas and unique structures that require different interpretive approaches from those of Hebrew narrative. These beautiful, passionate and often deeply personal writings are a reflection of the hearts of the writers and of the heart of God. For their theology, see Introductions to Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs.
