Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the Twelve (the Minor Prophets are counted as one book in the Hebrew canon) are together known as the Latter Prophets (for the Former Prophets, see Introduction to Joshua: Title and Theological Theme) and are often further divided into two groups: (1) The Major Prophets are the books of Isaiah through Ezekiel (in the Hebrew Bible, Lamentations and Daniel are included among the Writings [see Lk 24:44 and note]) and are called “major” because of their relative length and the variety of topics addressed. (2) The remaining books (the Twelve) are called the Minor Prophets (see article) because of their relatively short length and because they usually address a particular context or deal with a more singular theme. While some prophetic messages included visions and dreams of the future, the primary task of all the prophets was to call the Israelites back to faithfulness to their covenant God and to obedience to the terms of their covenants with him.
